The Three Zones That Define Table Coverage

Advanced players do not see the table as a flat surface. They see three zones — and so should you.

Stop seeing the table flat

Beginners see the table as a single rectangle. Advanced players see a three-zone shape.

The three zones

  1. Forehand short: stops and flicks
  2. Backhand deep: where you absorb power
  3. Middle: where most errors happen

The middle trap

When a drive comes straight at your body, you cannot decide forehand or backhand. That is the middle. Even pros miss here.

Solution: pre-decide footwork

When a ball is on your body, either pull the right foot back and play forehand, or shift half a step left and play backhand. Do not wait.

Bottom line

Once you see the table as three zones, strategy clicks. "Attack the middle" becomes a real instruction in match play.
