When to Serve Long, When to Serve Short
Three rules to decide. Half-measured serves get punished — pros only swing at ambiguity.

Long or short
The core of serving is length. Whether the second bounce lands on or off the table changes the meaning entirely.
Serve long when
- Opponent has weak return
- Your third-ball attack is sharp
- You want to push their forehand short
Serve short when
- Opponent loops hard
- You want them hesitating on return
- You are happy to trade pushes
The worst serve is "half"
A serve that might or might not bounce off the edge — chiquita food for advanced players.
Drill
Set three targets across an empty court: short, long, half. Hit 500 serves at each. Boring, but it works.
Bottom line
Serving is judgment, not technique. Decide before you toss.
