Stop Talking About Mental. Build Routines.

Strong mental is a vague slogan. Translate it into concrete pre-point routines.

The trap of "mental"

Lose a match and people blame "mental." But that explains nothing.

What you actually need is a routine you can execute under pressure.

Three-second pre-serve routine

  1. Bounce the ball three times
  2. One breath
  3. Silently rehearse the placement

Most of the doubt and rush vanishes.

Two-second pre-receive routine

Look at the opponent's paddle face and check their grip. Going to gather information kills the nervousness.

Between points

Won or lost — forget the point in one second. Have a ritual that resets you. Wipe your face. Tap your feet. Anything.

Bottom line

Replace "mental" with "routine." Once the vagueness is gone, you can improve.
